Being on the road for an extended time requires taking many more precautionary measures, especially health wise. Below is a list of necessary items I packed for my 21-day trip.
DIY First-Aid Kit
I put together a first aid kit tailored specifically for this trip. It included the following:
- Prescription medication, such as malaria, is recommended when traveling to countries on the yellow fever belt of Africa (more on that here). We were also prescribed antibiotics for traveler’s diarrhea if over-the-counter remedies failed.
- Travelan is a MUST PACK! It’s a digestive aid you take before eating a meal, especially street food. It’s likely the only reason I didn’t get food poisoning or diarrhea.
- Stomachache remedies, such as DiaResQ and Imodium, to relieve any traveler’s diarrhea.
- Liquid IV in case of dehydration, especially if experiencing diarrhea.
- Vitamin C packets, over-the-counter cold and allergy medicine. We ended up using all of this, so definitely recommend!
- Thermometer just in case you start feeling ill.
- Motion sickness aides such as ginger candy, and Dramamine.
- Ultrathon Insect Repellent lotion is highly recommended for traveling to any country that has yellow fever.
PRO TIP: If you visit Kenya and end up with food poisoning or constant diarrhea go to a pharmacy and buy Tagera Forte and Flora Norm prebiotics.
Sanitary & Disinfecting Items
This was HUGE! There were so many places I visited, especially while on safari driving around without bathrooms, that lacked hand soap, proper washrooms with toilet papers, etc. The hand wipes, wet wipes to clean private areas, and hand sanitizer saved me. Additionally, disinfecting wipes to wipe surfaces down was useful.
Adapter
These are necessary for both European and African countries. Don’t forget to pack it or you won’t a method of charging your phone or using any electronics, including hair dryers.
Water Activity Gear
Water shoes and snorkeling gear were 2 things I didn’t pack and greatly regretted it, specifically for Zanzibar where the low tides expose sea urchins.
